US tax law is due for an overhaul, the current system is so complex as to be nearly incomprehensible while the cost of preparing taxes is astronomical; entire industries, government agencies and a myriad of other suppliers that service them get created out of thin air by the mere convention of Federal tax regulations. Need this be the case? Certainly not.
The FairTax is the best method for fixing the current tax system for one simple reason; Constitutional abolishment of wage withholding. There is much to be said for simplifying the code, say, with a flat tax, but what the FairTax really represents is an ethical shift. The argument for letting people keep all of their money is, foremost, a moral one and the FairTax aims to correct that dilemma boldly and with a finality that cannot be denied. But the difficulty in passing the FairTax could be monumental because it also represents a massive political shift of power.
